When it comes time to buy new furniture, whether you are replacing pieces you have had for a while or starting from scratch to furnish a new home, it can be an overwhelming and intimidating undertaking.

You want stylish furniture that reflects your own personal style, but is also functional. You want pieces that give the room the look you’re going for, but that will also outlast the current trends.

And then there’s the cost element. Good furniture is expensive! Can you find good quality, affordable furniture that won’t empty your bank account?

Finding the perfect mid century modern furniture piece

When my fiancé and I started looking for furniture for our first place together, these were the things on our minds as we browsed through brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers, trying to find pieces that fit the mid-century modern look we wanted to achieve.

We spent a lot of time and consideration choosing furniture for our living room because we know that this room is often the first people see when they walk through your door. It forms the first impression of your home. It’s also the room where you spend most of your time (hence, living room).

A focal piece of living room furniture is the coffee table. It serves both a functional and fashionable purpose. We wanted something to complete our clean-lined, earthy, mid century modern vision, but that also would work to hold our scented candles, beverage glasses, TV remotes, board games, laptops, and maybe even the occasional dinner plate, when the occasion calls for it. What was the right affordable mid century modern coffee table for us?

Mid Century Modern Coffee Table Overview

We settled on the Emerald Home Furnishings’ Chandler Rustic Industrial Solid Wood and Steel Coffee Table with Open Shelf. The table stands 18” high, 48” long, and has a width of 24”. The wood type is pine and is a distressed finish which gives it a rustic, natural look. The legs are sleek black steel with cross-bracing and fastened with exposed bolts.

There is approximately 10” between the top and bottom shelf, which makes for convenient storage of blankets, magazines, electronics, or any other living room paraphernalia needing a place to live.

The Emerald Home mid century wood coffee table came compactly packaged, which made for easy moving and the pieces were wrapped and separated with styrofoam and cardboard partitions. The directions were clear and assembly was easy. It took less than 20 minutes to put the whole thing together and have our coffee table ready to go!

We’ve had this table for over a year now, so we’ve been able to decipher what we do and don’t like about it.

You were probably wondering- yes, this coffee table is made in China. But for a stylish, affordable mid century modern coffee table, we’re not complaining! The dimensions are 48″ wide, 24″ deep, 17 1/2″ high. There is about a 10 inch space between the bottom and top shelves.

What We Like about this Mid Century Modern Coffee Table

Overall quality. The Emerald Home mid century modern coffee table is made of solid wood and steel. It’s built to last! The natural finish of the wood also means it’s not as prone to scuffs and scratches as smooth stained pine wood furniture, so it’s resilient to the ware and tear of daily usage.

Look and style. As I mentioned, we wanted something that fit a mid century modern style and this table does that. But, we also know that even though mid century modern is in vogue right now, it probably won’t be in a few years. And since we don’t want to have to buy a new coffee table in a few short years, we wanted something that would still be fashionable, even when the current trends aren’t so current anymore.

The style, colors, and materials of this table are classic, which means it’s versatile with just about any look. And since it is made with the aforementioned great quality, we can be confident that we’re going to get usage out of this table for a long time without having to worry about it looking outdated.

This coffee table color is brown, with a slight orange tint that we really like. The table top and bottom shelf are constructed of different pieces of reclaimed wood. The wood doesn’t all look the same, and we found the imperfections in every piece of wood to give a nice, unique look.

We clean our coffee table with this Pledge Orange Revitalizing Oil with natural citrus oils to give the wood a beautiful, natural shine. Many of our guests have complimented us on the results!

What We Don’t Love about this Mid Century Modern Coffee Table

The weight. This table is a little heavy. Nearly 28 pounds. That’s to be expected with the materials it’s made of and there are definite benefits to it being a solid piece of furniture. But, when it comes to moving it, it takes effort. Also, if you’re unfortunate enough to catch a shin or a toe on the corners—yow!!

Small spaces between the wooden planks. Part of the natural, rustic look of this table is the natural finish of the wood, which includes tiny cracks between the panels in certain places.

It doesn’t look bad, it but can if tiny particles of something get stuck in the spaces. We have a small aloe vera plant we keep on the table and sometimes bits of soil will spill out when we move or water it and the specks of dirt easily get in the cracks.

We also eat on the table pretty frequently and crumbs inevitably scatter and end up falling into the cracks. If you aren’t careful when wiping the table down, the crumbs/specks will get lodged too deep to get out without some sort of prod and good luck finding something small enough to fit.

We love our Emerald Home coffee table and feel like we made a smart choice with this mid century modern coffee table. It is a great product for value, functionality, and style.

We feel confident that this piece will be in our living room for several years to come while still maintaining its pristine condition and its classic, versatile look will fit with any other cosmetic changes we make to our living room.
